Our latest entrepreneurial adventure continues. We bought a mattress store! Surprised? Yeah, we are too. I mean, this was not ever a part of any of our plans – and then it was… But that’s how the Dirkse’s roll. 

 

Fred met the original owner in the fall of 2020 when he was hired to do marketing work for the previous owner’s mattress stores (he has another location in Traverse City, Michigan). Fred dug in and started learning more and more about the mattress industry in general as well as how the retail mattress business operates. Jim, the previous owner, asked Fred if he was interested in partnering up and running the Holland store in addition to performing the marketing work – Fred was intrigued.

 

The store is just minutes from our home in Holland, Michigan. Fred can run his other businesses from there as well (marketing & e-commerce stuff) and the mattress store works by appointment, so it really seemed like a good potential fit.

 

Part of the process was determining if we enjoyed the business and everything that comes with it. We wanted to see if Fred enjoyed running a retail business in general and specifically selling mattresses.  We also wanted to get deeper into the business and make sure the products were high-quality and that the business is profitable of course. 

 

In short, it was a yes all the way around! It’s a fun business, we enjoy working with the customers, and our mattress suppliers are AMAZING. The quality of the mattresses are outstanding and our suppliers really stand behind their products. 

 

Fast forward a few months and we now own Affordable Mattress Store of Holland, Michigan and I’m married to Fred the Mattress Man. Go figure 🙂
